Generally my philosophy in the garden is that in a healthy biodiverse system the good bugs and bad bugs will come into balance. Similarly we believe that we can promote a wildlife friendly farm that minimizes the damage of say coyotes or even deer in the pasture by maintaining a super diverse brushy edge around the pasture. The interface of our managed lands and the wild lands around it are the most interesting places on the farm, where squirrels, woodcocks, wrens, turtles, opossum, deer and yes, even skunks, can can exist without the threat of highways or other encroaching human threats. We try to think of the farm as an abundant oasis, but then I get a scourge of tomato hormworms hungrily munching my tomatoes it throws my whole philosophy into question. #bugsinbalance #healthyecosystem #ecologicalagriculture #wildlifefriendlyfarming #tomatohornworm #wheremypredatorsat #predatorywasp #nospray #notever #seekingbalance #triadnc
This evening in the garden was magical. Then our dogs met a skunk by the back door to the log cabin and the magic was ruined, or at least we were distracted from it. #eveningsonthefarm #makingfriendswithskunks #everythingiscomplicated #summernights #farmlife #thegoodandthebeautiful #skunked #whycantwebefriends #farmdogs
